Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement daily lesson plans that promote cognitive, social, and physical development in accordance with curriculum guidelines.
  • Create a welcoming, safe, and inclusive environment for children, fostering positive relationships with each child.
  • Supervise and engage children during playtime, group activities, and individual tasks, ensuring their safety and well-being at all times.
  • Monitor children’s progress and provide regular feedback to parents/guardians regarding their development.
  • Facilitate and encourage positive social interactions among children, helping them develop communication and teamwork skills.
  • Prepare and serve nutritious meals and snacks, promoting healthy eating habits.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the classroom and play areas, ensuring all materials and supplies are available and in good condition.
  • Collaborate with other staff members to create a cohesive and supportive environment for children and families.
  • Adhere to all health and safety regulations and daycare policies, including emergency procedures.

Tasks

  • Bathe, diaper and feed infants and toddlers
  • Develop and implement child-care programs that support and promote the physical, cognitive, emotional and social development of children
  • Storytelling
  • Supervise staff, trainees or volunteers
  • Assist early childhood educators in carrying out programs that promote the physical, cognitive, emotional and social development of children
  • Lead activities by telling or reading stories, teaching songs and taking children to local points of interest
  • Order supplies and equipment
  • Assist early childhood educators or supervisors in keeping records
  • Encourage children to express creativity through the media of art, dramatic play, music and physical activity
  • Engage children in activities by telling stories, teaching songs and preparing crafts
  • Guide and assist children in the development of proper eating, dressing and toilet habits
  • Prepare snacks and arrange rooms or furniture for lunch and rest periods
  • Observe children for signs of potential learning or behavioural problems and prepare reports for parents, guardians or supervisor
  • Submit written observations on children to early childhood educators or supervisors
  • Discuss progress and problems of children at staff meetings
  • Knowledge of licensing regulations
  • Establish guidelines for behaviour
  • Attend staff meetings to discuss progress and problems of children
  • Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with co-workers and community service providers working with children
  • Plan and maintain an environment that protects the health, security and well-being of children
  • Supervise and co-ordinate activities of other early childhood educators and early childhood educator assistants

Supervision

Credentials

Certificates, licences, memberships, and courses

  • Member of the College of Early Childhood Educators (CECE)
  • Early Childhood Education (ECE) Certificate
  • Montessori Early Childhood Teacher Certificate

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or a related field preferred; an Associate’s degree or relevant certification may be acceptable.
  • Previous experience working with young children in a daycare or educational setting.
  • Strong knowledge of child development principles and age-appropriate activities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships with children, parents, and colleagues.
  • Patience, creativity, and a genuine passion for working with children.
  • CPR and First Aid certification is a plus.

Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed in a daycare environment, which may involve standing for long periods and engaging in physical activities with children.
  • May require lifting children and equipment and responding to emergencies.
