A live-in caregiver (child care) is someone who lives in the employer’s home and provides care for children on a full-time basis. Duties and requirements vary by country and employer, but generally include the following:

Responsibilities

Tasks

  • Assume full responsibility for household in absence of parents
  • Perform light housekeeping and cleaning duties
  • Travel with family on trips and assist with child supervision and housekeeping duties
  • Bathe, dress and feed infants and children
  • Discipline children according to the methods requested by the parents
  • Instruct children in personal hygiene and social development
  • Keep records of daily activities and health information regarding children
  • Maintain a safe and healthy environment in the home
  • Organize, activities such as games and outings for children
  • Prepare and serve nutritious meals
  • Tend to emotional well-being of children
  • Help children with homework
  • Administer first-aid and other assistance
  • Assist clients/guests with special needs

Child Care Duties

  • Supervising and ensuring children’s safety.
  • Feeding infants and children, preparing meals and snacks.
  • Bathing, dressing, and helping with personal hygiene.
  • Organizing educational and recreational activities.
  • Helping with homework and school-related tasks.
  • Taking children to and from school, appointments, or activities.
  • Maintaining children’s daily routines, including naps and bedtime.
  • Performing light housekeeping related to the children (laundry, tidying play areas, washing bottles, etc.).

Common Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent (sometimes preferred or required).
  • Experience caring for children, either professionally or personally.
  • First Aid and CPR certification (often preferred).
  • Good communication skills.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings or weekends if needed.
  • Clean background check or police clearance.
  • Physical ability to care for children and perform related household tasks.
  • Knowledge of child development and safety practices.
