Responsibilities:
- Driving and Delivery:
- Transporting goods over long distances, adhering to traffic laws and safety regulations.
- Operating and maneuvering trucks, including handling various road and weather conditions.
- Route Planning:
- Planning routes and estimating travel times based on delivery schedules, traffic conditions, and trucking regulations.
- Using GPS navigation and maps to find optimal routes and avoid delays.
- Load Securing and Inspection:
- Ensuring cargo is securely loaded and properly balanced to prevent shifting during transport.
- Conducting pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the truck, including brakes, tires, lights, and other systems.
- Documentation:
- Maintaining accurate records of driving hours, mileage, fuel consumption, and delivery schedules.
- Completing paperwork such as bills of lading, delivery receipts, and inspection logs.
- Customer Service:
- Interacting professionally with customers during pickup and delivery of goods.
- Handling inquiries, providing updates on delivery status, and addressing customer concerns.
- Safety and Compliance:
- Following safety protocols and procedures to ensure the safe operation of the truck and protection of cargo.
- Adhering to transportation laws and regulations set by the Department of Transportation (DOT) and other authorities.
- Vehicle Maintenance:
- Performing routine maintenance tasks such as checking fluids, lubricating parts, and cleaning the truck.
- Reporting any mechanical issues or maintenance needs to the dispatch or maintenance team.
Tasks
- Plan or adjust routes based on changing conditions, using computer equipment, global positioning systems (GPS) equipment, or other navigation devices, to minimize fuel consumption and carbon emissions
- Address customers’ complaints or concerns
- Mountain driving expertise
- Arrange travel, related itineraries and make reservations
- Drive as part of a two-person team or convoy
- Drive lighter, special purpose trucks
- Load and unload goods
- Operate and drive straight or articulated trucks to transport goods and materials
- Oversee condition of vehicle and inspect tires, lights, brakes, cold storage and other equipment
- Perform brake adjustments
- Receive and relay information to central dispatch
- Record cargo information, hours of service, distance travelled and fuel consumption
- Tarping and ensuring safety and security of cargo
