A Snow Shoveler and Grounds Maintenance Worker is responsible for maintaining outdoor areas, particularly during winter months, by clearing snow and ice from walkways, parking lots, driveways, and other outdoor spaces. In addition to snow removal, this role may also involve general grounds maintenance such as mowing lawns, trimming hedges, and ensuring the landscape is tidy and well-kept year-round.

Key Responsibilities:

Snow Shoveling and Winter Maintenance:

  • Snow Removal: Shovel snow from sidewalks, driveways, walkways, and entrances to ensure safe passage for pedestrians and vehicles. Use manual tools (shovels) or powered equipment (snow blowers, plows) depending on the area and snow accumulation.
  • Ice Control: Apply salt, sand, or other de-icing agents to surfaces to prevent ice buildup and ensure safe walking and driving conditions.
  • Clearing Entrances: Make sure entrances to buildings, parking lots, or other key areas are free from snow and ice to avoid accidents or delays.
  • Snow Plowing: In larger areas, assist with snow plowing or operate larger equipment to clear roads, parking lots, or driveways.
  • Maintaining Tools and Equipment: Ensure that snow shovels, snow blowers, plows, and other winter maintenance equipment are in good working condition. Perform basic maintenance and repairs as needed.

Grounds Maintenance (Non-Winter Months):

  • Lawn Care: Mow lawns, trim grass along edges, and maintain the appearance of green spaces.
  • Hedge and Bush Trimming: Trim and prune shrubs, hedges, and trees to ensure they are well-maintained and healthy.
  • Planting and Gardening: Plant and maintain flowers, trees, shrubs, and other vegetation, ensuring proper watering and care.
  • Weeding and Mulching: Remove weeds from gardens, flower beds, and other landscape areas. Apply mulch to beds to help retain moisture and prevent weed growth.
  • Trash Removal: Pick up litter and debris from grounds, ensuring that outdoor areas are neat and clean.
  • General Grounds Maintenance: Perform various tasks like repairing fences, cleaning outdoor facilities, fixing irrigation systems, or even painting outdoor structures to maintain the property’s appearance.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Physical Stamina: The job requires physical exertion, especially when shoveling heavy snow or performing manual labor tasks like mowing lawns or trimming bushes.
  • Attention to Detail: Ability to spot areas that need snow removal, weeding, or other maintenance tasks. Ensuring that all areas are clean, safe, and visually appealing is crucial.
