A Warehouse Worker – Material Handling is responsible for moving, storing, and organizing products and materials within a warehouse. They play a key role in maintaining the efficiency of warehouse operations by ensuring that items are properly stored, inventoried, and easily accessible for shipping or further processing.

 Work must be completed at the physical location. There is no option to work remotely.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Loading and Unloading: Safely load and unload products and materials from delivery trucks, shipping containers, or storage areas. This often involves using forklifts, pallet jacks, or manual handling.
  • Inventory Management: Assist with counting, labeling, and tracking inventory, ensuring products are stored correctly and that records are up-to-date. This may include scanning barcodes or using inventory management systems.
  • Product Storage and Organization: Ensure that products are stored in the correct locations according to the warehouse layout, optimizing space and making sure items are easy to retrieve when needed.
  • Order Fulfillment: Pick and pack products based on customer orders or stock requests. This may involve assembling packages, wrapping items, and labeling for shipment.
  • Material Handling Equipment: Operate machinery like forklifts, pallet jacks, conveyors, and other tools to move materials safely and efficiently throughout the warehouse.
  • Quality Control: Inspect products and materials for damage or defects during handling, reporting any issues to supervisors for follow-up.
  • Cleaning and Maintenance: Maintain a clean, organized, and safe warehouse environment by sweeping floors, cleaning equipment, and ensuring that aisles are clear and free of obstacles.
  • Safety Compliance: Follow safety guidelines, including proper lifting techniques and wearing required protective gear (e.g., safety vests, helmets, gloves). Ensure that all material handling tasks are performed in a safe manner to avoid accidents.
  • Documentation: Complete paperwork or digital records for incoming and outgoing goods, including shipping, receiving, and inventory updates.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Attention to Detail: Accuracy is key in inventory tracking, order picking, and handling materials, so the ability to focus on details is essential.
  • Forklift Certification: Often required for operating forklifts and other heavy machinery, which may be obtained through employer-sponsored training or certifications from recognized bodies.
  • Organization: Good organizational skills to ensure that products are stored and retrieved in an efficient and logical manner.
  • Time Management: Ability to work quickly and efficiently to meet deadlines, especially when fulfilling orders or managing high-volume periods.
  • Teamwork: Ability to work well with other warehouse workers, supervisors, and logistics teams to ensure smooth operations.
  • Problem Solving: Ability to address issues that arise, such as locating misplaced items, handling equipment malfunctions, or solving logistical challenges.

Education and Experience:

  • Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is typically required. Additional coursework or certifications in logistics, warehouse management, or material handling can be beneficial.
  • Experience: Previous experience in warehouse work, retail, or logistics is often preferred. Experience with warehouse management systems (WMS), material handling equipment, or inventory tracking is an advantage.
  • Certifications:
    • Forklift Operator Certification (often required by employers)
    • Safety certifications, such as OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) training
    • First aid or CPR training, depending on company requirements

Work Environment:

Warehouse workers in material handling typically work in large warehouses, distribution centers, or manufacturing facilities. These environments may be noisy, busy, and require workers to move heavy materials. The work can be physically demanding, involving lifting, bending, standing, or walking for extended periods.
