Primary Responsibilities:
- Surface Preparation:
- Prepare surfaces for painting by cleaning, sanding, scraping, or priming as needed.
- Fill holes, cracks, and imperfections with fillers or putty.
- Ensure that surfaces are smooth and ready for the application of paint.
- Painting:
- Apply paint, stains, varnishes, and other finishes to walls, ceilings, woodwork, and other surfaces.
- Use brushes, rollers, and spray equipment to apply coatings.
- Ensure an even, smooth application of paint with no streaks or runs.
- Mixing and Matching Paint:
- Mix and match paints and finishes to achieve desired colors and consistency.
- Ensure the correct type and amount of paint is applied according to surface requirements and job specifications.
- Protective Coatings:
- Apply protective coatings such as sealers, primers, or varnishes to prevent damage and ensure durability.
- Apply caulking around edges and joints to seal gaps and prevent moisture damage.
- Safety and Cleanliness:
- Maintain a safe working environment by using protective gear (masks, gloves, goggles) and ensuring proper ventilation.
- Follow safety protocols to handle and store paints and chemicals.
- Clean and maintain tools and equipment regularly.
- Job Site Management:
- Set up and clean up work areas before and after each job.
- Cover floors, furniture, or fixtures to protect from paint splashes or spills.
- Ensure the area is tidy, leaving no debris or paint residue behind.
- Client Interaction:
- Discuss project details, color schemes, and specific needs with clients.
- Provide estimates or timeframes for completion.
- Address any client concerns or issues during or after the project.
- Maintenance and Repairs (Optional):
- Perform touch-ups, re-coating, or re-finishing as required.
- Handle minor repairs or maintenance tasks for surfaces being painted (e.g., replacing broken drywall or minor wall repairs).
Tasks
- Prepare, clean and sand surfaces to be painted
- Repair cracks and holes
- Mix paint to desired colour and texture
- Measure, cut and apply wallpaper and other fabric to walls
- Advise consumers on colours and choice of wall coverings
- Erect scaffolding and swing stages and attach rigging
- Apply paint, wallpaper and other materials and finishes to interior and exterior surfaces
- Estimate costs and materials
Skills & Qualifications:
- Painting Techniques: Knowledge of various painting techniques (brush, roller, spray) and how to apply different types of coatings.
- Attention to Detail: Ability to work with precision to ensure an even, flawless finish.
- Physical Stamina: Ability to stand, bend, and kneel for long periods; lift and carry equipment, tools, and materials.
- Time Management: Ability to complete tasks within set timeframes while maintaining quality.
- Color Sensitivity: Good eye for color matching and understanding how different paints look on various surfaces.
- Safety Awareness: Knowledge of safety standards, including handling hazardous materials and using proper protective gear.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience: Previous experience in residential or commercial painting is often preferred.
- Certifications: Some employers may require certification for lead-based paint removal or other specialized training.
- High School Diploma or Equivalent: Many painters have a high school education or equivalent, though formal education is not always required.
Working Environment:
