Farm Workers are responsible for performing a wide range of agricultural tasks to assist in planting, cultivating, harvesting, and maintaining crops or caring for livestock. They work closely with farm managers or other supervisory staff to ensure the efficient operation of the farm, contributing to crop production, soil health, and the overall upkeep of the farm.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Planting and Cultivating Crops:
    • Assist with planting crops, including seeds, young plants, and trees.
    • Operate hand tools or equipment to prepare the soil for planting and to tend to growing crops (e.g., weeding, watering).
    • Assist with the application of fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides as directed by farm managers.
  2. Harvesting Crops:
    • Harvest crops manually or using machinery, depending on the type of crop and equipment available.
    • Sort and pack harvested crops for transport or sale, ensuring they meet quality standards.
    • Load and unload produce onto transport vehicles.
  3. Livestock Care (if applicable):
    • Feed, water, and monitor the health of livestock, such as cows, pigs, chickens, or sheep.
    • Assist with milking, shearing, or egg collection as needed.
    • Clean and maintain animal housing areas (e.g., barns, pens) and ensure animals are housed safely.
  4. Farm Maintenance:
    • Maintain farm equipment, tools, and vehicles by cleaning and performing routine maintenance tasks.
    • Assist with the construction or repair of fences, irrigation systems, and farm buildings.
    • Keep the farmyard, fields, and other areas free from debris and hazardous materials.
  5. Irrigation and Water Management:
    • Set up and maintain irrigation systems to ensure crops receive proper water.
    • Monitor weather conditions and soil moisture to determine the appropriate irrigation schedule.
  6. Crop Protection:
    • Assist with pest control and disease management by applying safe pesticides or fungicides.
    • Ensure proper storage and use of agricultural chemicals, following all safety guidelines.
  7. General Labor:
    • Perform general labor tasks such as lifting heavy objects, cleaning storage areas, and organizing supplies.
    • Assist in any other farm tasks as needed, depending on the time of year and specific farm operations.
  8. Record Keeping:
    • Keep basic records of tasks completed, crops planted or harvested, and any issues or concerns related to the crops or livestock.
    • Maintain logs of equipment used and report any maintenance needs.

  • Clear and collect brush and debris from fields, pens and other work areas
  • Clear fields of wood and stones
  • Greenhouse cleaning
  • Level earth to fine grade specifications
  • Mixing fertilizer
  • Fertilize and spray crops
  • Harvest crops
  • Operate and maintain farm machinery and equipment
  • Provide agricultural crop services such as plowing, irrigating, cultivating, spraying or harvesting
  • Maintain quality control and production records
  • Perform general farm duties
  • Examine product for quality and its readiness for the market

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent. On-the-job training or agricultural coursework can be beneficial.
  • Experience: Previous experience in agriculture, landscaping, or farm work is preferred but not always required.
  • Skills:
    • Ability to operate farm equipment such as tractors, plows, and harvesters.
    • Strong manual labor skills and ability to work with hand tools.
    • Knowledge of basic agricultural practices, including planting, cultivating, and harvesting.
    • Ability to work long hours in varying weather conditions.
    • Good physical stamina and ability to lift heavy objects (up to 50 lbs or more).
    • Basic knowledge of crop or livestock health, pesticides, and safety regulations.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work in all weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, etc.).
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, such as lifting, bending, and standing for long periods.
  • Ability to operate heavy machinery and equipment safely.
  • Ability to work in outdoor environments, often in remote or rural locations.

Working Hours:

  • Farm Workers often work long hours, especially during planting and harvest seasons, and may be required to work on weekends or holidays.
  • Shift hours can vary depending on the type of farm and the season.
