A Farm Hand – Livestock is responsible for assisting with the care and management of livestock on a farm or ranch. They play a vital role in ensuring the health, well-being, and productivity of animals, as well as maintaining clean and safe facilities for their housing and activities.

Responsibilities:

  1. Livestock Care:
    • Feeding and watering livestock according to feeding schedules and dietary requirements.
    • Monitoring and observing animals for signs of illness, injury, or distress, and reporting concerns to farm managers or veterinarians.
  2. Handling and Herding:
    • Handling and moving livestock safely and efficiently using appropriate herding techniques and equipment.
    • Assisting with livestock breeding, birthing, and rearing processes as needed.
  3. Facility Maintenance:
    • Cleaning and maintaining livestock housing, including barns, pens, and paddocks.
    • Bedding and nesting management to ensure comfort and cleanliness for animals.
  4. Health and Hygiene:
    • Administering medications, vaccines, and treatments under supervision and following established protocols.
    • Ensuring compliance with biosecurity measures to prevent disease outbreaks and maintain herd health.
  5. Equipment and Tool Operation:
    • Operating and maintaining farm equipment and tools used for feeding, cleaning, and handling livestock.
    • Performing routine maintenance checks and reporting equipment malfunctions or repairs needed.
  6. Record-Keeping:
    • Keeping accurate records of daily activities, including feeding schedules, health observations, and livestock inventory.
    • Reporting data to farm managers or supervisors for analysis and decision-making.
  7. Seasonal Tasks:
    • Assisting with seasonal tasks related to livestock management, such as pasture rotation, grazing management, and harvest preparations.
    • Participating in farm projects and activities as assigned, including fencing, irrigation, and other farm infrastructure tasks.
  8. Safety and Compliance:
    • Adhering to farm safety regulations and protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safe handling practices.
    • Following animal welfare guidelines and ethical standards in all aspects of livestock care and management.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Animal Husbandry Knowledge: Understanding of livestock behavior, health, and nutritional needs.
  • Physical Stamina: Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting, bending, and prolonged standing.
  • Teamwork: Willingness to work collaboratively with farm staff and follow instructions from supervisors.
  • Problem-Solving: Ability to identify issues, troubleshoot problems, and make sound decisions in livestock care.
  • Communication: Basic verbal communication skills to interact with farm managers, veterinarians, and other team members effectively.
