Key Responsibilities:

  1. Laboratory Management:
    • Supervise daily operations of the food testing laboratory, including sample preparation, analysis, and data recording.
    • Manage and train laboratory staff, ensuring they are proficient in testing procedures and safety protocols.
    • Develop and implement testing protocols and procedures to ensure consistency and accuracy in results.
  2. Testing and Analysis:
    • Oversee the testing of food samples for various parameters, including microbiological, chemical, and physical properties.
    • Ensure that testing methods and equipment are accurate, reliable, and up-to-date with industry standards.
    • Interpret test results, identify potential issues, and provide recommendations for corrective actions.
  3. Quality Assurance:
    • Monitor and maintain quality control procedures to ensure the accuracy and reliability of test results.
    • Review and validate test reports, ensuring they meet regulatory and company standards.
    • Conduct regular audits and inspections of the laboratory to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations.
  4. Regulatory Compliance:
    • Ensure that all testing processes and practices comply with relevant food safety regulations and industry standards.
    • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of regulations and standards, and implement changes as needed to ensure compliance.
    • Prepare and submit required documentation and reports to regulatory agencies as necessary.
  5. Team Leadership:
    • Lead and motivate a team of food testers, providing guidance, support, and performance evaluations.
    • Coordinate scheduling and workload distribution to ensure efficient laboratory operations.
    • Foster a collaborative and positive work environment, encouraging continuous improvement and professional development.
  6. Equipment and Inventory Management:
    • Oversee the maintenance and calibration of laboratory equipment, ensuring it is in good working condition.
    • Manage inventory of testing supplies and materials, ordering and replenishing as needed.
    • Ensure proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials and waste in accordance with safety regulations.
  7. Customer and Stakeholder Communication:
    • Communicate with clients, suppliers, and other stakeholders regarding testing results, issues, and recommendations.
    • Address any questions or concerns related to food testing and provide expert guidance as needed.

Tasks

  • Train staff/workers in job duties, safety procedures and company policies
  • Recommend personnel actions such as hiring and promotions
  • Prepare production and other reports
  • Recommend measures to improve productivity and product quality
  • Supervise, co-ordinate and schedule (and possibly review) activities of workers
  • Establish methods to meet work schedules and co-ordinate work activities with other work units
  • Requisition or order materials, equipment and supplies

Qualifications:

  • Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Microbiology, Chemistry, or a related field required; a Master’s degree or higher is preferred. Proven experience in food testing or a related laboratory role, including previous supervisory experience.
  • Skills: Strong leadership and management skills, proficiency in food testing methodologies and equipment, and excellent problem-solving abilities. Attention to detail and strong analytical skills.
  • Certifications: Relevant certifications in food safety, quality control, or laboratory management may be required or preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand for extended periods and perform tasks in a laboratory environment.
  • Comfort with handling and analyzing samples, including the use of laboratory equipment.

Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed in a laboratory setting, which may involve exposure to chemicals, biological agents, and varying temperature conditions.
  • The role may involve working standard business hours, with occasional additional hours depending on project needs and testing schedules.
