Primary Responsibilities:
- Personal Care Assistance:
- Assist clients with daily activities such as bathing, grooming, dressing, and personal hygiene.
- Help with mobility, including transferring clients from bed to wheelchair, assisting with walking, or using mobility aids.
- Monitor and assist with toileting needs, including incontinence care and changing adult diapers.
- Meal Preparation and Feeding:
- Prepare nutritious meals based on clients’ dietary requirements or preferences.
- Assist with feeding clients who have difficulty eating independently.
- Ensure that clients maintain proper hydration and nutrition.
- Companionship and Emotional Support:
- Provide companionship and engage in conversation, helping clients feel less isolated.
- Offer emotional support and encouragement, ensuring clients’ mental and emotional well-being.
- Engage clients in recreational activities such as reading, puzzles, games, or light physical exercise.
- Medication Assistance:
- Remind clients to take prescribed medications at the right times.
- Ensure medication is taken correctly, though home support workers typically do not administer medication unless properly trained or authorized.
- Monitor for any potential side effects or changes in health that may require notifying a supervisor or family member.
- Household Assistance:
- Help with light housekeeping tasks, such as cleaning, laundry, and dishwashing.
- Assist with organizing and tidying up living spaces to ensure a safe environment.
- Help with grocery shopping or running errands as needed.
- Health Monitoring:
- Observe and document clients’ physical and mental health status, noting any changes that may need to be addressed by a medical professional.
- Take vital signs (if trained and certified), such as temperature, pulse, blood pressure, or weight.
- Report any health concerns or significant changes to the client’s family members or healthcare team.
- Transportation Assistance:
- Assist with transportation to and from medical appointments, social events, or other necessary outings.
- Ensure the client’s safety while traveling, whether in a vehicle or on foot.
- Promote Independence:
- Encourage clients to perform tasks on their own whenever possible, promoting independence and self-sufficiency.
- Provide physical assistance with activities, but encourage as much participation as the client is capable of.
- Safety Support:
- Help create a safe environment for clients, ensuring that there are no hazards (e.g., tripping risks) around the home.
- Assist in the use of medical equipment, such as walkers, wheelchairs, or oxygen tanks, and ensure these are used safely.
